Governor Mike Braun declared a new statewide energy emergency Wednesday extending Indiana’s gas tax holiday through September 5th.
The current emergency, tied to oil shipping problems from the Iran conflict, is set to expire today.
Braun says the new order is needed because of Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil facilities and Canadian wildfires disrupting the Alberta Oil Sands Region.
Since the governor can’t extend the existing emergency again without a special legislative session, he issued a separate emergency based on new factors.
Attorney General Todd Rokita says Indiana law does not bar the governor from declaring separate emergencies for different reasons.
The new energy emergency takes effect Friday.
The gas tax holiday has saved Hoosiers about 61 cents per gallon since spring.
