Governor Mike Braun declared a new statewide energy emergency Wednesday and reinstituted his suspension of Indiana’s Gasoline Usage Tax and Gasoline Excise Tax through September 5th.
The energy emergency set to expire Thursday was based on the oil shipping problems caused by the Iran conflict.
Braun says this new energy emergency is prompted by Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil facilities and the disruption to the Alberta Oil Sands Region from Canadian wildfires.
The governor is not allowed to extend the existing energy emergency any further and the legislature would need to be called into special session to do so.
Attorney General Todd Rokita notes that “nothing in Indiana’s emergency powers statutes prohibit the Governor from declaring separate emergencies based upon different factors.
This new energy emergency will take effect on Friday, following the expiration of the current energy emergency.
The action has saved Hoosiers about 61-cents per gallon since Spring.
