Fire Prevention Week is underway and this year Indiana is focusing on lithium-ion battery safety.
State Fire Marshal Steve Jones says everyday charging habits can prevent fires.
He says always use the charger that came with your device, charge on a hard, flat surface — never on a bed or couch — and unplug once it’s fully charged.
Stop using a device immediately if it gets very hot, swells, smokes or smells strange.
And Jones says charge larger batteries — like e-bikes, scooters and power tools — outside and away from exits, where a fire can spread fast.
