A man was killed Thursday after an exchange of gunfire with an Evansville police detective responding to a reported medical emergency.
Police say the detective arrived at a home in the 500 block of Colonial Avenue around 1 p.m. and was met by a man with a gun.
Investigators say the man fired first, and the detective returned fire.
The man died despite emergency medical care.
A woman and a child inside the home were not hurt.
The detective has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
