Vincennes pet owners will now have to pay fees if their animals are picked up by animal control.
The city council approved a new rule that requires owners to cover the cost of care while their pet is being held at the shelter.
The shelter has been dealing with overcrowding, and staff say animals are sometimes held for long periods while cases are sorted out.
Under the new system, owners are asked to pay a monthly fee to cover food, housing, and care.
If the fee isn’t paid, the city can take over ownership of the animal and place it for adoption.
