For many college students, a career in agriculture may not be the first thing that comes to mind, especially if that’s not their field of study. But AgriNovus Indiana’s Field Atlas program is helping change that by showing students just how many opportunities exist across the agbioscience industry.
Field Atlas connects college students with career pathways, employers, mentors and hands-on experiences.
Karis Witte, who oversees the Field Atlas program, talks about the latest tour. “We took about 20 students from around the state of Indiana at different college campuses. We took them on tours of lamb farms and Corteva Agroscience. So they got to experience the agbioscience industry firsthand and learn about all of the innovation happening within this space.”
AgriNovus says the goal is to help students see that agriculture goes far beyond the farm, with opportunities in areas including science, technology, engineering, finance, marketing and data.
She says bringing students from different majors together with industry professionals can be an eye-opening experience.
According to Don Lamb, who’s family farm was on the tour itinerary, “It’s really great when you see people who are really, technologically minded, really smart in the way that you can apply technology. But they’ve also got that practical side of knowing why we’re doing it, why we need this technology, and how it helps a family. They asked a lot of questions about the family and how do you survive in farming and so it’s really that cross between the heart of farming and the technology that’s used in farming.”
The message is simple: there’s a place in Indiana agriculture for students with a wide range of interests and skills.
