For the second straight year, the Franklin Farmers Market has been crowned Indiana’s favorite farmers market—and the numbers behind the victory show just how strongly the Johnson County community has rallied around its local market.
The Franklin market captured nearly 2,800 votes in this year’s Indiana Grown Ultimate Farmers Market Challenge, finishing well ahead of the competition as more than 10,000 Hoosiers cast ballots during the two-week statewide voting period.
The victory gives Franklin the title for the second consecutive year and further cements the market’s reputation as a gathering place where Indiana agriculture, local food and community pride come together.
“Congratulations to the Franklin Farmers Market for winning the Indiana Grown Farmers Market Challenge for the second year in a row,” said Caroline Patrick, director of Indiana Grown. “We know how important farmers markets are to communities across the state, and we’re proud to recognize their impact each year through this challenge.”
But the significance of the competition goes beyond which market collects the most votes.
For farmers, growers, food producers and other small businesses, a farmers market can provide something increasingly valuable: a direct connection with the people who buy what they produce.
Customers aren’t simply purchasing a tomato, loaf of bread, bouquet of flowers or other locally produced item. They’re often meeting the person who grew it, raised it, baked it or made it.
That connection is at the heart of Indiana Grown’s annual challenge.
The 2026 competition featured farmers markets from communities across Indiana, giving consumers an opportunity to put their hometown markets in the spotlight while recognizing the producers and vendors who make those markets possible.
Franklin’s winning performance was particularly impressive given the statewide competition. The Westfield Farmers Market finished second in voting, while The Farmers Market at Winona Lake placed third.
Franklin Farmers Market operates Saturdays from May through September, from 8 a.m. to noon. The market features more than 90 vendors, along with live music and monthly themed days designed to bring shoppers back week after week.
That combination of local products and community atmosphere has helped make the Franklin market a destination—not simply a place to buy fresh food.
And the voting results suggest that connection runs deep.
Nearly 2,800 people took the time to cast their support for Franklin, helping the market repeat as Indiana’s Ultimate Farmers Market.
The result also adds another chapter to the young history of the statewide competition.
The Coffee Creek Farmers Market in Chesterton won the inaugural challenge in 2024 before Franklin captured the title in 2025 and again in 2026.
For Indiana’s farmers and small-scale producers, however, the real winners may be the communities that continue showing up.
Farmers markets create a face-to-face link between Indiana’s agricultural producers and the consumers who want to know where their food comes from. They also give local businesses an opportunity to build relationships, establish loyal customers and keep more dollars circulating within their communities.
That makes a Saturday morning at the farmers market about more than shopping.
It’s about knowing the farmer behind the produce.
It’s about supporting the producer down the road.
And, perhaps most importantly, it’s about keeping the connection between Indiana agriculture and the people it feeds strong.
For the Franklin Farmers Market, thousands of votes have now made that message official—again.
The market is Indiana’s favorite for the second consecutive year.
