Indiana is betting that the future of crop protection will be shaped not only in the field, but also in the laboratory—and an Israeli ag-biotech company is making the state its U.S. launch pad.
IBI Ag, a company developing next-generation biological insecticides, will establish its North American headquarters in Indiana, Gov. Mike Braun announced Wednesday. The move makes IBI Ag the first Israeli company to establish Indiana operations through the new Iron Nation–Indiana initiative and could give Hoosier farmers a front-row seat to emerging biological crop-protection technologies.
The company is developing bioinsecticides designed to provide alternatives to conventional chemical insecticides. Its technology combines validated biological targets, protein engineering and artificial intelligence-driven protein design to develop highly targeted products with new modes of action.
For Indiana farmers, the potential payoff could be significant.
New biological insecticides could eventually give growers additional tools for managing insect pests, particularly as concerns grow over resistance to existing chemistries, the need for more targeted pest control and pressure to improve the environmental profile of crop-production systems.
But those benefits remain on the horizon. IBI Ag’s products still must move through field development, regulatory review and the U.S. registration process before they can be commercially available to growers.
That makes the company’s decision to locate its North American headquarters in Indiana particularly important.
IBI Ag plans to use its Indiana operation as the hub for U.S. field trials and product development, regulatory activities, strategic partnerships, market development and preparations for commercialization.
“Establishing our North American headquarters in Indiana marks an important step in IBI Ag’s transition from product development toward commercialization,” said Arnon Heyman, PhD, MBA, chief executive officer of IBI Ag. “A permanent presence here will allow us to work more closely with growers, regulators, research institutions, strategic partners and future customers as we advance our products toward the U.S. market.”
A potential new tool for Hoosier growers
The significance for Indiana agriculture goes beyond the number of jobs the company eventually creates.
As IBI Ag develops its products for the U.S. market, Indiana farmers and agricultural organizations could become increasingly involved in field development and evaluation. The company’s plans call for collaboration with Indiana research institutions and agricultural organizations as its products move through the development and regulatory process.
That could create opportunities for Indiana to play a role in determining how new biological crop-protection products perform under Midwestern growing conditions.
The company already has a relationship with Indianapolis-based Corteva Agriscience, providing an established connection to one of the world’s largest agricultural technology companies.
IBI Ag has also hired Indiana-based Tenton Lindeman as its chief operating officer.
Heyman says the company expects to add a small number of jobs over the next two to three years as it builds its Indiana operation.
The initial employment numbers may be modest, but state officials see the headquarters as something larger: a potential catalyst for bringing additional agricultural technology investment, research and commercialization activity to Indiana.
“IBI Ag’s decision to establish its North American headquarters in Indiana is a testament to our state’s dominance in the agricultural sector and our intentional and persistent pursuit of innovation,” Braun said.
The company is still selecting a permanent site for its Indiana headquarters. In the meantime, IBI Ag plans to lease office space in an existing facility.
A bigger bet on Indiana agriculture
IBI Ag’s arrival is the first tangible result of Iron Nation–Indiana, a $60 million-plus initiative launched in April to connect Indiana with Israel’s technology ecosystem.
The initiative includes a $15 million investment from the State of Indiana and more than $30 million committed through the Iron Nation partnership. The goal is to attract high-growth Israeli technology companies to establish U.S. operations in Indiana while connecting those companies with the state’s corporations, universities, research institutions and other economic assets.
For Indiana agriculture, that strategy could prove particularly important.
The state already has a deep agricultural research and commercialization network anchored by Purdue University, major agricultural companies, farmers, agribusinesses and a growing life-sciences and biotechnology sector.
Adding international ag-tech companies to that ecosystem could help Indiana strengthen its position as a place where agricultural technologies are not only researched, but tested, commercialized and ultimately brought to farmers.
“IBI Ag is establishing more than an office—it is building meaningful roots in Indiana,” said Indiana Secretary of Commerce Chuck Goodrich. “The company is adding Hoosier leadership, expanding its connections to Indiana’s agricultural industry and preparing to work with our research institutions.”
That connection between research and farming could be one of the most important long-term impacts of the announcement.
If IBI Ag’s biological insecticides successfully move through development and regulatory approval, Indiana could become an important base for introducing those technologies into the U.S. agricultural market. That could mean new research activity, additional private investment and opportunities for Indiana farmers to participate in field trials and evaluate emerging pest-management tools.
It could also strengthen Indiana’s broader agricultural economy by attracting companies that need access to farmers, researchers, agricultural businesses and major crop-production markets.
From Israel to Indiana’s fields
Israel has built a reputation as a global technology and innovation center, particularly in areas where agriculture intersects with biotechnology, water efficiency and precision technologies.
Indiana offers something different but equally valuable: a large agricultural base, major research institutions, established agribusinesses, manufacturing capabilities and direct access to the U.S. farm market.
The Iron Nation–Indiana initiative is designed to connect those strengths.
“By bringing together Israel’s technology ecosystem and Indiana’s strengths, the Iron Nation-Indiana collaboration can help advance solutions that improve lives, strengthen food and agricultural systems and address some of humanity’s most pressing challenges,” said Elad Strohmayer, Consul General of Israel to the Midwest.
For Indiana farmers, the long-term implications could be much bigger. Agriculture is increasingly becoming a technology business, with biologicals, artificial intelligence, genetics, precision agriculture and other emerging technologies reshaping how farmers manage crops and inputs.
IBI Ag’s decision to locate its North American headquarters in Indiana gives the state another foothold in that rapidly evolving industry.
And if the company’s technology makes the journey from laboratory research to commercial fields, Indiana could have more than a headquarters to show for it.
It could have a new crop-protection tool—and another piece of the state’s agricultural economy built around innovation.
