The Dubois County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a real estate scam in which people are taking pictures of homes that are not actually for rent or sale and posting them on Facebook Marketplace as if they were.
The sheriff’s Office advises that if you’re looking to buy or rent, make sure you’re doing your due diligence and verifying that what you’re about to rent or buy is legitimate.
One of the current scams asked for a $70 application fee before anyone was even able to look at the property.
Authorities say if something doesn’t seem right, please be cautious about the information you provide.
It’s always better to go in person if possible or at least speak with someone on the phone before sending money or giving out personal information.
If you come across a suspicious listing, let others know so they don’t become the next victim.
