Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita is threatening to sue Merrillville over the town’s “efforts to sabotage” a new federal immigration detention facility in the area.
Merrillville leaders say they are not trying to sabotage anything and have only expressed their First Amendment-protected opinion opposed to the project.
Rokita says “Indiana will not tolerate any kind of sanctuary-style obstruction of immigration enforcement from local government officials.”
The town council passed a resolution in January opposed to any attempt by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to convert existing warehouses into an ICE facility.
