Multiple tornadoes touched down in Gibson County Sunday evening, destroying the Blythe Chapel Church near Owensville and damaging homes and other property, but no injuries have been reported.
Gibson County Sheriff Bruce Vanoven says witnesses reported seeing tornadoes near State Road 65 and County Road 850 South, south of Owensville.
The storm moved east, leaving behind a path of damage.
Some homes were destroyed in the area, with additional damage reported near Warrenton.
Another tornado was reported near State Road 168 north of U.S. 41.
Officials are assessing the damage and asking people to avoid traveling through impacted areas.
In Sullivan County, severe storms left behind damage in several communities.
Officials reported storm damage near Wilfred and Shelburn.
Deputies believe a tornado may have touched down near Wilfred, and a home damaged in Shelburn belongs to Sullivan County Commissioner John Waterman.
The city of Sullivan also reported damage from Sunday’s storms.
Officials continue to assess the damage and are asking people to avoid areas with downed trees, power lines, and other hazards.
A possible tornado is being investigated in Newburgh. The twister is blamed for causing a structure collapse at the Park Place Apartments retirement community on High Pointe Drive late last night.
It happened at 10:50 p.m., but the Newburgh Volunteer Fire Department says no one was badly injured.
Meanwhile utility crews continue work to restore power to thousands of homes and businesses in southwest Indiana
