Dubois County Prosecutor Beth Schroeder says investigators have identified “Baby Doe,” an infant found deceased at the Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand in 1987, more than four decades later.
Charges of murder and voluntary manslaughter have been filed against the child’s biological mother.
Her name has not been released.
Authorities say the pregnancy was unintended and that the defendant was a minor at the time.
Schroeder noted the seriousness of the charges reflects the loss of life while also underscoring the challenges faced by young people in crisis.
She says advances in DNA technology and the work of the Indiana State Police Cold Case Unit led to the identification, allowing the child to be remembered with dignity.
No additional details are being released due to privacy and legal considerations.
