The Indiana State Police Putnamville District is warning the public about a phone scam epidemic.
Individuals are calling, often threatening harm, to steal money in the form of gift cards.
Never assume caller ID is correct.
Police urge Hoosiers not to answer unfamiliar numbers, and to call the local agency or family member back if in doubt.
Remember, never give out personal information, as money sent via prepaid card or wire transfer is nearly impossible to recover.
