For the first time in nearly four decades, Oakland City is getting new homes.
City leaders broke ground this week on the Oakland Gardens project, which includes eight duplexes with four more units planned.
The homes will be built on land where the old Spalding store sat vacant for over 20 years.
Mayor James Deffendall, who helped launch the project over four years ago with New Hope Services, called the development a major step forward for the Gibson County town.
