Retailers and researchers are criticizing a move by Indiana to exclude soda and some candy from being able to be purchased with SNAP funds.
The federal government approved the change last month, and it will take effect in January.
Indiana Grocery and Convenience Store Association president Joe Lackey says the decision came without much warning for retailers and says he thinks SNAP will be going away nationwide.
Indiana University professor emeritus of geography Dan Knudsen, who is also on the IU Food Institute, says the expenses will be shifted to other places.
