Purdue 1 is helping bring the excitement of space exploration closer to home, inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and explorers right here in Indiana.
Through its mission to advance space exploration and inspire scientific discovery, Purdue 1 is encouraging young people to stay curious, think creatively, and consider the possibilities that lie beyond our planet.
Jason Williamson, Purdue 1 Mission Crew member talks about the mission. “The Purdue one spaceflight was really born out of an interest to continue Purdue’s legacy of research in space. Five crewmates will be conducting five different research projects that are all Purdue led and affiliated, which is going to be a phenomenal thing both for Purdue University, their legacy with space and the many other programs.”
Williamson says inspiration starts early, with opportunities for students to learn about space, technology, and the role Indiana can play in the future of space exploration.
One way youngsters can get involved is through the Purdue 1 Indiana Fifth Grade Essay Competition. The contest invites fifth-grade students across the state to explore the Purdue 1 mission and share their own thoughts about space and the future of exploration.
Willaimson says, “We’re really excited to read the information when the essays come in about just unique and different ideas. That’s how the next giant leaps are founded…through big ideas. I’m encouraged by their creativity and what may come to them as a young person. I hope we get to read some really fascinating and intriguing ideas from our students.”
It’s an opportunity for young Hoosiers to put their ideas on paper, use their imaginations, and discover that a future in space exploration may be closer than they think.
