Thousands of blue corduroy jackets are invading downtown Indianapolis this week for the 99th National FFA Convention and Expo. The event brings tremendous economic value to the state, but FFA members are doing more than just spending money to enrich Central Indiana. They’re executing their motto of learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live and living to serve.
National Days of Service are bringing students together to support local organizations and make a difference in the communities hosting the convention.
Elizabeth Sendelweck FFA Service Team Program Manager says, “Today we are making tie scarves for Circle City relief. Our goal is about 2500. We made 800 on the first day alone, so we are hoping to do that or more today. and it’s going out to homeless people and kids that need scarves.”
Here in the Expo Hall and around Indianapolis, service activities offer FFA members an opportunity to put their leadership skills into action while helping others.
According to Abby Kelsey of Tennessee, “Just knowing that we’re helping out people in need, knowing that it won’t be much, but it’s still something to help keep them warm.”
The convention also features service projects around Indy, like at the Indiana State Fairgrounds and Midwest Food Bank. Organizers say these activities reflect FFA commitment to living to serve, reminding students that leadership isn’t just about what you accomplish, but how you help others.
Harley Charlson of Iowa says, “Just knowing that you’re helping people that just don’t have a lot and you’re just able to bring a little joy in their life, especially when they need it in these upcoming cold weathers. I think it just makes you feel like, just deep within yourself, I have made an impact in somebody’s life.”
And Audrey Zickefoose of Alaska said, “I don’t know how cold it gets here in Indianapolis, but I hope it can go to someone maybe like a younger kid who doesn’t have access to warm clothes that has to like walk to school or something, and they have that scarf to help keep them warm.”
National Days of Service continue on Friday, giving FFA members from across the country a chance to leave a lasting impact on their host city.
