It has been a great week for harvest progress in Indiana, and in a Channel Seed update it is obvious that harvest is winding down in north-central Indiana.
“I would say from a soybean perspective probably nearing 90% or better as far as soybean harvest, and I would say on corn probably closer to 60% harvested,” says Bret Henderson, Channel sales agronomist for northern-central Indiana. And he tells HAT the yield numbers are varied as we all assumed they would be.
“We’ve got a lot of good yields we’ve heard, and we’ve had the flip side of that as well. In general, I would say corn yields are maybe off 10%, and on the soybean side I’ve heard some that have had their best year ever, and others would echo that that’s not the case. So, a very variable year across the state of Indiana, depending upon where those rains set up and fungicide applications. Those acres that have been sprayed with fungicide definitely are doing better than those that were not. This is definitely a year that pays.”
Standability has been an issue during this season, most specifically in fields that did not receive a fungicide application, “as well as some of the earlier stuff that has been weathered more through the heavy rain events had more crown root rot and things of that effect,” he said. “With a lot of wind events that happened in August and July we’re finding a lot more green snap and a little more downed corn out there than originally thought, in some situations requiring harvest just one way in the field.”
