Governor Mike Braun has denied clemency for death row inmate Roy Lee Ward, allowing his execution to proceed on October 10th.
The decision aligns with the Parole Board’s recommendation, which cited the brutal nature of Ward’s 2001 crime.
Ward’s legal team has raised concerns about the risk of pain from the state’s intended execution drug, pentobarbital.
Ward raped and murdered 15-year-old Stacy Payne on July 11th, 2001 after forcing his way into her home in the Spencer County community of Dale when she answered the door.
Ward stabbed her with a knife repeatedly.
