Indiana lawmakers have passed a bill which aims to crack down on predatory vehicle towing practices in the state.
The legislation requires towing providers to be transparent, cap fees, and ensure access to personal belongings, while penalizing bad actors.
The new regulations come in response to Indiana being identified as the top predatory towing state in the nation, with commercial carriers reporting the most incidents.
The law also mandates itemized invoices, sets restrictions on rates for emergency tows, and requires law enforcement agencies to include specific provisions in their contracts with towing companies.
Additionally, the legislation allows commercial carriers to file complaints with the Indiana Attorney General’s Office if they believe charges are unreasonable.
