Last summer, Hoosier families received $120 per child monthly for food while schools were closed, but Indiana won’t participate in the federal summer food service program, SUN Bucks, in 2025.
The program provided financial assistance to ensure schoolchildren have access to meals during the summer.
Despite the discontinuation of SUN Bucks, free summer meals are still available at approximately 1,000 locations in low-income areas of the state.
Advocates are concerned about the impact on families struggling with rising grocery costs and limited access to meal sites, especially in rural areas.
