The ACLU of Indiana has filed a lawsuit against Governor Mike Braun over a state budget bill that changes how Indiana University’s Board of Trustees are selected.
The new law gives the governor the power to appoint three trustee members instead of allowing alumni to elect them.
The ACLU argues that this violates the Indiana Constitution as it is considered “special legislation.”
The plaintiff in the lawsuit, an IU alum named Justin Vasel, was a candidate for the trustee election, which has now been affected by the law.
The ACLU believes that alumni should have a say in selecting board members, as is the case with other public universities in the state.
