A new state policy in Indiana has given the governor the power to solely appoint all members of the Indiana University Board of Trustees, removing alumni involvement in the selection process.
This change, included in the state budget, has prompted criticism from IU alumni who believe it weakens their influence and the university’s governance.
Governor Mike Braun defended the decision, asserting that the previous selection method was not representative and that the new rules will lead to a more effective board.
The policy allows the governor to appoint all nine trustees and also to remove and replace current alumni-elected members.
