State lawmakers are considering a two-dollar increase in cigarette taxes to help make up a two-point-four-billion-dollar budget shortfall.
That would double the taxes on cigarettes in the state if approved.
State Representative Gregory Porter of Indianapolis says the increase is “way overdue” and says it could add up to 800-million-dollars to state coffers.
The proposal would also increase taxes on electronic cigarettes from 15-percent to 31-percent.
