The Illinois Department of Public Health warns to watch out for ticks this summer.
Vector Control Program Manager Samantha Kerr says it’s best to avoid walking through areas with tall grass, and if hiking in the woods, stay in the center of the trail.
Insect repellent is also a good idea.
When you come back inside, it’s advised to check yourself and pets for ticks.
If you find one, use tweezers to pull it straight out of the skin.
Kerr says you should save the tick in a baggie or container in case you end up getting sick.
Bring it to the doctor with you for easier identification of a possible tick-borne illness.
