Dubois County Sheriff Tom Kleinhelter says if you mistakenly call 911, don’t hang up.
If you hang up, there is no way for law enforcement to call back to determine if there is an emergency.
Dispatchers must assume the call is legitimate until they learn otherwise.
That means officers must devote time and resources to tracking down the call, potentially taking time away from true emergencies.
Kleinhelter also reminds the public that old cell phones, which sometimes are given to children, can still make 9-1-1 calls.
Many unintentional calls are often made by children.
He says county dispatch officials estimate more than 30% of calls to the 911 center were accidental in 2020.
